September Trip to Haiti Accomplished Much

Rev. Martin Hawley, director of development

Agri Team in Haiti

I just returned from a trip to Haiti with our Harvest of Hope agriculture team and Seth Wallace, one of our partners in ministry from Mission to the World. I am thrilled to report to you that the tractors cleared customs and were delivered to our compound in La Plaine in time for our arrival. The farming team made a lot of progress in prepping and servicing the two tractors for use on the seventy-acre site.

While there, Seth and I captured photographs and video detailing the amazing things that God accomplished through Pastor Gef Ganey and the other men of the agriculture team. We also were moved by the compassion and efficiency of the MTW medical team, who were at the compound during the same week, and were able to treat almost 200 Haitian patients each day!

Linda teaching art to the childrenLinda Maphet, a talented Georgia artist, also traveled to La Plaine during the week. She obtained donated art supplies through the kindness of the Blick art materials stores and spent quality time with the children doing arts and crafts projects. Our orphans were delighted with her and appreciated the attention. For many of the children, it was the first time they had had multiple colors of crayons to use for drawing. You will have the opportunity to see some of what the children created, as their artwork will be featured as part of this year’s RHI Christmas card collection.

Young Men in Haiti

On the last night of my trip to La Plaine, I had the privilege of meeting with twelve of the young men who are in Jean’s leadership training institute. We talked about micro-finance and their specific plans for starting their own small businesses in Haiti. As a result of this meeting, I collected photographs of each entrepreneur and a description of the type of business each one of them would like to start. In the weeks and months ahead, RHI will be promoting these young men and their proposed businesses as opportunities for our ministry partners to invest in the economic transformation of Haiti. For approximately $1,000 per entrepreneur, you can capitalize a business opportunity and start a young Haitian down the road from dependence to self-sufficiency.

This development trip was certainly a milestone in our ministry to Haiti, as we had the largest number of Americans serving on the compound since its foundation. There are now many more churches interested in serving with Jean Paul’s work in La Plaine and the list of mission team trips between now and the middle of 2011 is growing rapidly.

MTW Captures Development Progress on the Ground at RHI
